Samsung Galaxy: Another Android Blasts Off

IT'S getting harder and harder to keep up with all the latest Android mobile phone launches.

They are like buses. You wait ages for one, and then about six come along at once.

Hot on the heels of the Sony Ericsson X10, LG's first in the GW620, HTC and its Legend and Desire plus Samsung's own Galaxy Portal now comes this beauty.

Again it's a Samsung. Again it's a Galaxy but this is codenamed the S and we've no idea why. It's hardly catchy.

But names aside, it's a stonker of a handset with a massive FOUR INCH display using the AMOLED technology which gives the screen high-definition quality, bright vivid colours and drains far less power so you get more talktime.

The Korean company will only reveal it will be out "soon" in Britain but that just means more time to get excited.

The Galaxy S uses the now common 1GHz processor to make it super fast when browsing and multi-tasking while its so-called Social Hub ties all your friends' social network info together in one place.

So whether it's Facebook updates, Tweets, pictures or comments, you won't have to hunt far to see what they are doing.

With mobiles coming onto the market like this one, and the HTC Desire, Apple is going to have to work very hard on the fourth-generation iPhone.

There's so little to choose between the operating systems now and Android has just announced it now has 30,000 apps in its Market.

True, Apple might have 150,000 on the go but there's only so many you're ever going to need and use and the Market is filled with more than enough to keep you busy and entertained.

Regular Gizmo readers will know we've tipped Android for big things in 2010 and judging by how many manufacturers are rushing out handsets using the operating system, we're sure we're right.

On top of supporting all of Google's mobile services such as Google Search, Gmail and Google Maps, the S gives you daily info such as weather, news and share prices to your home screen.

It also features DLNA (Digital Living Network Alliance) technology which means it'll hook up to gadgets like televisions also using the platform to exchange information.

It comes with a desk cradle to use it as a clock or photo frame - although we can't see that catching on - and you can jot down thoughts that you later want to send off as texts or emails.

It is also good for business by the sound of things with the ability to view and edit Microsoft Office 2007 documents.

Oh and because it's running Android OS 2.1, it is bang up-to-date unlike rivals such as the X10 which is stuck back on 1.6 despite only just coming out.

There's also a five megapixel camera, HD video recording, an RSS Reader, Wi-Fi 802.11 and it comes in either 8GB or 16GB storage versions.

It's always easy to talk up a handset and say it will fight the iPhone, just look at what happened with the Google Nexus One. It's not selling as well as was hoped and it'll be eclipsed soon by the HTC Desire.

But that handset and the Samsung Galaxy S are both capable of giving Steve Jobs a run for his money this summer.

And even if they don't, they'll certainly be enough to make Android take-off in a big way.
