Big quake hits Indonesia's Aceh

A powerful quake with a magnitude of at least 7.2 hit the Indonesian province of Aceh on Sunday in an area devastated by the killer waves of the 2004 tsunami. The quake struck at 12:59 pm (0559 GMT) 66 kilometres (41 miles) southwest of Meulaboh on the Aceh coast, according to the local Meteorological and Geophysics Agency, triggering a local tsunami alert. The US Geological Survey put the magnitude of the quake at 7.4. There were no immediate reports of casualties or damage although some media said panicked people rushed from their houses and some sought higher ground. The people of Aceh are still traumatised by memories of December 26, 2004, when the Indian Ocean surged over the northern tip of Sumatra after a 9.3-magnitude quake split the seabed to the island's west. Indonesia was the nation hardest hit in the tsunami, one of the world's deadliest natural disasters, with at least 168,000 people killed out of more than 220,000 who lost their lives across the region....

Strong Quake Jolts Indonesia’s Aceh

A strong earthquake jolted Indonesia’s Aceh province at the northern end of Sumatra Wednesday, damaging buildings and injuring at least a dozen people, officials said. Indonesia’s Meteorology and Geophysics Agency issued a tsunami warning, but it was lifted more than an hour later after no big waves materialised. The quake, measuring 7.2 on the Richter scale, struck at 5.15 a.m. (2215 GMT Tuesday) with its epicentre 75 km south-east of Sinabang on Simeulue island off the western coast of Aceh province. It occurred 34 km beneath the seabed, the agency said.

C Aceh Earthquake Damages 28 Schools

The January 28 earthquake that rocked Central Aceh damaged at least 28 schools, forcing thousands of students to stay at home, a government official said. The natural disaster also caused local residents and government to suffer material losses totaling Rp73.784 billion (1US$=Rp9,450), the district government`s spokesperson, Windi Darsa, said here Tuesday. The temblor damaged at least 28 schools and 600 houses, he said.

People all over the world are scrambling to help the rescue effort in earthquake-torn Haiti, and Tiger Woods may be joining the cause. According to a report, the troubled golf great is considering a $3 million donation to help provide medical care to those who were injured in the disaster. Hip-hop mogul Russell Simmons told press, “Tiger is working on sending a mobile hospital with 50 EMTs to go set up a triage. I am just asking for his heart and his hand. Just to meet the needs of the people.”
