Facebook's Ads: Relevant or Missing the Mark?

Image by Getty Images via @daylife I've always seen a great deal of potential in Facebook's advertising offering. The premise is that ads are highly targeted based on users' profile information. Theoretically, the more a user adds info about the kinds of things they like, the better idea Facebook has about what they are actually interested in, and can serve ads accordingly.  Does Facebook serve you ads that you find relevant? Let us know . To be honest, it's been hit or miss with me. I see a lot of ads for things that I actually do like, which is more than I can say for ads in other channels, but I see a lot of ads that make me wonder why I was possibly targeted for them as well. The question is: how good at targeting is Facebook? I stumbled across a post from Robert Brady at Righteous Marketing talking about the problems he's having with Facebook ads.

Why the Facebook reward card might actually harm Facebook...

Image via CrunchBase The Facebook reward card scheme is a big coup for Facebook - it works the social network deeper into our everyday lives, making it helpful for business transactions as well as everyday socialising. The Taggo card takes Facebook to fulfilling Mark Zuckerberg's dream of Facebook having its own ecosystem...and of everything you do involving Facebook at some some level. But while Facebook is pushing to be at the centre of everyone's relationships, whether that's with their friend, their favourite singer or their local coffee shop -- it isn't always going to be in Facebook's favour to do that. Because Facebook gets money from advertising . While Facebook wants to help brands and businesses connect with people over fan pages, if they do that too efficiently then it takes away the need for advertising. Not just advertising elsewhere - papers, TV etc, but also the need for advertising on Facebook.

Facebook location feature to track your whereabouts

Facebook is to roll out its location based features later this month, according to the Advertising Age. It's a move that could have serious repercussions for businesses as well as end users. Firstly, in terms of the general public, users will be given the option to check in at locations such as bars, restaurants and shopping centres. Sound a bit like what Foursquare and Gowalla do now? That's because it is. The trouble for those fairly new start-ups is that Facebook already has a huge user base. Foursquare has about a million users, Facebook has over 400 million. There will, of course, be concerns with privacy and security. Facebook won't just go ahead and start posting geo-data, users will presumably have to opt in or out. The issue is, not all users will understand what they may be agreeing to.

Google CEO Says Newspapers Can Make Money Online

Google Inc. Chief Executive Eric Schmidt told a group of editors Sunday that he is confident that newspapers will find new ways to make money online by harnessing the vast reach of the Internet. Media executives have accused Google of draining readers and advertising from newspapers' Web sites. But in a speech to open the annual conference of the American Society of News Editors, Schmidt said Google recognizes that newspapers are vital to democracy and provide a critical source of online content. "We understand how fundamental your mission is," he said. Schmidt predicted that the news business will find a new model, based on a combination of advertising and subscription revenue. He said Google hopes to facilitate that, but he offered no specifics.
