Actress Luna Maya has said that she is not planning to take any steps over her feud with entertainment journalists following an outburst on Twitter where she compared them to prostitutes.
In a message posted on Tuesday night, she wrote: “Infotainment are LOWER than PROSTITUTES, MURDERERS!!!!! May your soul burn in hell!!!”
Following her post, she has been threatened with boycotts by entertainment television programs and the Indonesian Journalists Association (PWI) has reported her to police.
The PWI filed a complaint against Luna for defamation, lies and unpleasant conduct. She would be charged under Chapters 17 and 45 of the controversial Electronic Information And Transaction (ITE) Law, which carry a punishment of up to to six years in jail or an Rp 1 billion ($100,000) fine.
On Friday, Luna said she was still studying the case.
“I can’t say much at this stage because I am still waiting for the development [of the case]. As a law abiding citizen, I will follow the legal process,” Luna told Metro TV.
She added that she will consult legal and information technology experts. Luna admitted she was tired and annoyed with the infotainment crews who always pushed her to speak about her private affairs when she wrote the message.
Meanwhile, the Alliance of Independent Journalists (AJI) said they had received numerous complaints about infotainment programs.
Margiyono, AJI’s coordinator for legal affairs, said that Luna Maya’s case should make entertainment reporters reflect on how they do their job.
Margiyono said that the AJI also questioned whether infotainment programs were ‘journalism’ because they often violated the journalism code, especially in relation to other people’s privacy. The AJI suggested Luna Maya and the PWI settle the case peacefully.
