For users who have been awaiting the arrival of a Facebook “Dislike” button, don’t believe the wall posts you see claiming to be just that–it’s a scam.
This fast spreading scam appears as a Facebook status update in your News Feed that says “Facebook now has a dislike button! Click ‘Enable Dislike Button’ to turn on the new feature!” Next to the Like and Comment links at the bottom of the post it also says “Enable Dislike Button,” but please don’t click on it!
Once you click the link, the message will be posted as your status (exposing all of your friends to the scam) and a JavaScript code will run on your computer. These kinds of codes are very dangerous because they bypass security settings on your computer’s browser and leave your computer exposed to malware.
Some of the “Dislike” Button scams lead you to a link outside of Facebook where they try to convince you to copy the JavaScript code directly into your browser. These should say “Facebook Now Has A Dislike button! Enable The Feature @ http://bit.ly/kfHFNR.” Once you click on the bit.ly link, you’ll be directed to a page that asks you to copy the code in the text field, go back to Facebook.com and then paste it into your browser’s address bar. This will run the malicious code on your computer. This scam is almost easy to fall for if you’re not being cautious because the “Enable Dislike Button” message in the corner looks so official, but we’ve seen this with scams before. Just last week we reported about a scam that had a ==VERIFY MY ACCOUNT== link where the Like and Comments links should be located.
There is no official “Dislike” button on Facebook, and even if there was, it’s very unlikely that Facebook would lead you outside of their domain to obtain it. To stay safe, never copy a link into your browser and think about it: why would Facebook tell you about an official button in a friend’s status update? Wouldn’t they show you in a more official way?
