The move will ensure that data is transmitted more securely between a user's    computer and Google's email servers, and is designed to prevent hackers and    cybercriminals "snooping" on mail accounts in public Wi-Fi    hotspots.
Google said that the timing of the announcement was unrelated to the news that the Gmail accounts of human rights activists had been hacked in China, leading Google to consider winding down its web presence in the country unless it was allowed to offer citizens uncensored access to the internet.
