9 Reasons Why Google Apps is “Telework in a Box”

I’ve recently been thinking about how Google Voice, Google Wave and Google Buzz joining the full Google Apps lineup would make it a budget-friendly teleworking platform. Organizations can now literally purchase themselves a “telework in a box” solution — a complete office productivity software, communications and collaboration package — with little or no requirement for support from their own technical staff.

Here are some reasons why Google Apps might be your organization’s ideal telework platform:

1. Low operating costs. Google Apps Premier Edition included everything and costs $50 per user per year. It can release you from software licensing costs and free up some of your internal technical staff from having to support telework applications, though you’ll still have to factor in some administrative and support time to provision and maintain remote users.
2. Lower hardware costs. Outfitting teleworkers with hardware can be a major expense, especially if your organization isn’t standardized on notebook PCs. Google Apps is platform-agnostic, so teleworkers can use their own home PCs for accessing their email and documents.
3. Lower security costs. While you aren’t going to be able to get around some administrative tasks in order to support your teleworkers using Google Apps, you aren’t going to have the security expenditures that would come with other solutions where you have to manage increased remote access to your corporate network and applications.
4. Unified communications. The addition of Google Voice, Google Wave and Google Buzz means that Google can be a unified communications platform. Often, one of the integral elements of successful telework programs is multiple communications channels. With Google Apps, you’ll be able to offer voice, instant messaging, email and video conferencing to your teleworkers.

5 Things That Don’t Work on Facebook Pages

Should you have a Facebook Page? Before integrating Facebook Pages (sometimes called “Facebook Fan Pages”) into your social media marketing mix, you need to think strategically. Georgina provided a basic overview of the need for strategy in “Businesses and the Social Media Trap,” and I ranted about the problem of not understanding strategy in the first place in “It’s the Social Media Strategy Struggle.”


This week, I want to discuss why people become fans of Facebook Pages in the first place. I’ll follow that with some thoughts on what doesn’t really work on Pages. After that, I’ll list some things that I believe do work, based on personal and professional experience, industry news and anecdotal information.

I am surprised by the number of Facebook Pages that are popping up marketing what I would consider to be pretty “unmarketable” things for a Facebook audience. Let’s face it: Not everything should be marketed using every new cool tool on the block. Facebook Pages have specific features and functionality that may not always suit all the things you’d like to market. Facebook fans also have certain expectations in terms of how, when and why they interact on a Facebook Page.

Facebook May Share User Data With External Sites Automatically

Imagine visiting a website and finding that it already knows who you are, where you live, how old you are and who your Facebook friends are, without your ever having given it permission to access that information. If you're logged in to Facebook and visit some as yet unnamed "pre-approved" sites around the web, those sites may soon have default access to data about your Facebook account and friends, the company announced today.


Barry Schnitt, Senior Manager, Corporate Communications and Public Policy at Facebook, told us in an email that "the right way to think about this is not like a new experience but as making the [Facebook] Connect experience even better and more seamless." There will be new user controls made available, but this is a new experience: this makes Facebook Connect opt-out instead of opt-in.

The proposed change was first written about by Jason Kincaid on TechCrunch, who called it Facebook's Plan To Automatically Share Your Data With Sites You Never Signed Up For.

Apple to Introduce Two New iPhone

Apple is working two new CDMA iPhones and one of them is supposed to be introduced in the market this summer. Carriers other than AT & T will be able to sell the gadget. The wireless network CDMA is used by the companies like Verizon and Sprint. But, AT & T and most of the global carriers use GSM technology. AT&T has over 43% smart-phone customers in US, compared with 23% customers for Verizon. Additionally, Apple plans to bring a new version of its current iPhone this summer. The model is expected to be thinner and have a faster processor, two people familiar with the device said.

Some people of the company outlined that the new GSM iPhone will be manufactured by Taiwanese contract manufacturer Hon Hai Precision Industry Co., that produced Apple's previous iPhones. The CDMA iPhone model will be made by Pegatron Technology Corp., the subsidiary of Taiwan's ASUSTeK Computer Inc., said these people. Pegatron is scheduled to produce CDMA iPhones in September.

Verizon expressed publicly its interest for CDMA iPhone. Verizon is upgrading its network for better technology. According to research firm Bernstein & Co., once the iPhone is available through Verizon, which has over 91 million customers, and potentially other CDMA carriers, it will open up a new market. In 2009, iPhone sales went up 83% globally to 25.1 million, which outnumber the 20% to 25% growth in smart phones overall sales.

Out Of Band Internet Explorer Security Update

Microsoft’s Security Response team just announced that they will be publishing an out of band cumulative update for Internet Explorer due to a publicly disclosed security vulnerability that is affecting Internet Explorer 6 and Internet Explorer 7. The team notes that Internet Explorer 8 installations are not affected by the security vulnerability and that the security update will be released on March 30 at approximately 10:00 a.m. PDT.

The update for Internet Explorer will be provided through Windows Updates or from the usual Microsoft sites where updates can be downloaded manually. The reason for the out of band update is Microsoft’s monitoring of the vulnerability which seemed to have uncovered an increased exploitation of the security vulnerability.

The update for Internet Explorer is cumulative as it contains nine additional vulnerability fixes that all were supposed to be released on Microsoft’s monthly patch Tuesday on April 13.

Kominfo Tertibkan Pengguna Frekuensi WiMax

Mempersingkat waktu untuk implementasi WiMax di Tanah Air, Kementerian Kominfo kini tengah menertibkan pemakaian pita frekuensi radio 2,3 GHz untuk keperluan layanan pita lebar nirkabel (wireless broadband).

Pada 23 Maret 2010, Kemenkominfo melalui Direktur Pengelolaan Spektrum Frekuensi Radio Tulus Rahardjo telah mengirimkan surat No 539/T/DJT.4/KOMINFO/3/2010 kepada seluruh Kepala Balai Monitoring dan juga Kepala Loka Monitoring Frekuensi Radio Ditjen Postel yang tersebar di seluruh Indonesia, yang isinya berupa suatu perintah bagi mereka untuk melakukan observasi dan monitoring terhadap penggunaan frekuensi radio pada pita frekuensi radio 2360 – 2390 MHz di wilayah kewenangannya masing-masing.

"Jika ditemukan pelanggaran-pelanggaran, kepada para Kepala Balai Monitoring dan juga Kepala Loka Monitoring Frekuensi Radio, diberi kewenangan untuk langsung melakukan penertiban dalam rangka penegakan hukum," papar Kepala Pusat Informasi dan Humas Kementerian Kominfo, Gatot S Dewa Broto, yang dikutip VIVAnews melalui keterangan resminya.

2010, Intel Hadirkan Prosesor Made in China

Mulai kuartal keempat 2010, China akan mulai meproduksi prosesor komputer. Pabrik prosesor milik raksasa chip komputer asal Amerika Serikat (AS), Intel Corp., akan mulai beroperasi di kota Dalian, China.

Seperti VIVAnews kutip dari kantor berita Xinhua, 29 Maret 2010, Kirby Jefferson, General Manager pabrik chip di Dalian mengatakan bahwa pabrik chip di kota pesisir itu akan memulai produksi pada pekan ke-44 tahun 2010.

Sebagai informasi, pabrik di Dalian tersebut merupakan pabrik chip pertama Intel di Asia, dan telah menerima investasi lebih besar lagi meskipun di tengah krisis keuangan global.

Dengan investasi senilai US$2,5 miliar, pabrik dibangun di Zona Pembangunan Teknologi dan Ekonomi Dalian di timur laut China, tepatnya di Provinsi Liaoning. Luas zona tersebut 160 ribu meter persegi.

Where Will Google Build Its Fiber Network?

Google over the next few months will be reviewing locales where it may build its experimental fiber network.

The search giant in February said it would build an experimental fiber optic network in an attempt to illustrate the art of the possible in a small number of communities in the U.S. Since that news, Google has been pitched by 600 responses from communities. Individuals also chimed in.

Now the requests for information are about over, Google will make a selection. Google said in a post:

Over the coming months, we’ll be reviewing the responses to determine where to build. As we narrow down our choices, we’ll be conducting site visits, meeting with local officials and consulting with third-party organizations. Based on a rigorous review of the data, we will announce our target community or communities by the end of the year.

Sejarah Huruf Alfabet

Istilah alphabet sebetulnya berasal dari bahasa Semit. Istilah ini terdiri dari dua kata, yaitu aleph yang berarti 'lembu jantan' dan kata beth yang berarti 'rumah'. Konotasi pictografis dari pengertian kedua kata ini menjadi sebutan untuk menunjukkan huruf pertama a (aleph) dan b (beth) dalam urutan huruf-huruf semit (Mario Pei,1971:176). Ini bukan berarti bahwa tulisan tersebut memakai sistem pictografis-ideografis, akan tetapi malah sebaliknya.

iPhone Ranked Number One for Traffic Share in Mobile OS: Study

According to the Mobile Metrics Report by mobile advertising firm AdMob, Apple and Google dominate as a platform in the smartphone market. If you make a comparison for Smartphone Platform traffic in USA, the traffic share of iPhone has dropped from almost 70% in April 09 to approx 45% in Feb 10, but still it holds half of the traffic share .Also, the growth of Android OS is very significant in the last several months. It almost catches up the iPhone traffic share in this Feb, 2010 because more and more Android based Smartphones are coming in the market like Motorola Droid etc. The share of RIM has gradually declined, while WebOS and Windows Mobile remain pretty much saturated at the bottom.

UK Politicians 'Social Media Reputation' Assessed Through Facebook, Twitter

A rating for British party leaders' online popularity has been made available with the use of social networking websites such as Twitter and Facebook.

MPs and candidates were said to be turning to the popular social forums as part of their campaign to test the political waters.

And one company, Yomego, has assessed their "social media reputation scores" (SMRs), based on the "noise" and "sentiment" surrounding the politicians, The BBC reported.

British Prime Minister Gordon Brown was said to have a popularity score of 68.20, out of 100, while that of Lead of the Opposition David Cameron's was 58.98, compared to leader of the Liberal Democrats Nick Clegg's 68.49, which was the highest.

On Line Rivalry Led 15 Year Old to Stab his Classmates

A 16 year old high school student can land up in Laguna Beach jail for a Facebook row with his ex classmates. Michael Jason Wilson stabbed his ex classmate, 17 yr old Julian C at his stomach and hit two of Julian's friend with a knife.

Julian C., drove to the house of Wilson with two 16-year-old (Nicholas L. and Sam S.) and a fourth friend. Wilson had previously attended the same high school as the four visitors.While three friends waited in the car, Wilson went to see Julian C. outside the house and a fight broke out, according to the OCDA,(Orange County District Attorney's Office). Wilson pulled out a carving knife with a 12-inch blade and stabbed Julian C. in the stomach.The other two friends went out of the car to help their injured friend and disarm Wilson. However, Wilson slashed the hands and arms of Nicholas L. and Sam S. during the fight. The fourth friend was not physically injured.

UU Pers Hanya Untuk Pers Profesional

Anggota Dewan Pers, Agus Sudibyo, menegaskan bahwa penerapan Undang-Undang Nomor 40 Tahun 1999 tentang Pers hanya untuk pers profesional dan berkerja sesuai aturan Kode Etik Jurnalistik (KEJ).

"Di luar itu, sepertinya tidak perlu diterapkan," ujarnya dalam seminar kebebasan pers bertema "Membuka Akses Keadilan Melalui Peningkatan Kapasitas Jurnalis" di Padang, Minggu.

Saat ini, kata dia, makna kebebasan pers banyak disalahartikan oleh segelintir pers. Mereka beranggapan bahwa kebebasan itu mutlak, dan malah ada yang terang-terangan melanggar ketentuan kode etik tersebut.

Hawaii Searching for Internet Answers with Google

Stuck in the Internet slow lane, Hawaii and its sluggish network are hoping Google will ride to the rescue.

Through online petitions, a Facebook fan page and a YouTube video by the governor, Hawaii wants to persuade Google to choose the islands for one of its experimental fiber-optic networks, which could bring Internet speeds 100 times faster than those currently available to most Americans.

The search engine giant is launching the experiment to test new ways to build fiber networks and to demonstrate the power of quick Internet to phone and cable companies. It invited all comers to say how they might benefit, and hundreds of communities from across the country have submitted bids arguing that they're the best location for the experiment.

Hawaii's efforts may be a tough sell. The state's surfing speeds are among the slowest in the country, and legislative efforts to improve speeds haven't borne fruit. And the isolation of being in the middle of the Pacific Ocean could make building a new network impractical.

Is the Latest Union Budget a Good or Bad News for Indian IT Industry?

 

Although, 2010-11 Union Budget has brought some good news for the construction, hospitality, banking, education and pharma sectors, but, it does not generate any good news for IT industry. The Finance minister didn't mention anything about the extension of Tax Rebate in this budget for IT industries.


Since, the tax break ends in Mar 2011, outsourcing major such as Infosys Technologies, Tata Consultancy Services and Wipro are going to lose from the Budget because there is no mention of Tax Rebate in the budget. But, the Infosys chief Mr. Murthy has a different view. In an interview before the budget, he said that IT industry is quite different from other industries. IT companies need to pay higher taxes. That's why STPI (Software technology Park of India) extension is not required.

According to the revelation by Electronic Frontier Foundation last week, an FBI or Federal Agent can make friendship with you at Twitter or Facebook to gather more information about crime investigations. The report further described that fed agents pose as "friends" and get connected with ordinary citizens on Facebook and other sites in order to gather background information for crime investigation. This will help them find out suspects on the run.

Now, the question arises about the legality of this type of activities. As per AP news stories, the middle aged lady Lori Drew posed as a teen boy on MySpace and harassed a 13-year-old neighborhood girl who later committed suicide. She was arrested for violating MySpace's terms of service to pose as someone that she is not and convicted in L.A. before a higher-court judge overturned the ruling. Fed prosecutors are making similar type of violation. Facebook has terms and conditions that makes it illegal if the user gives false information while signing in for the account.

Wikipedia Down: Affects Millions Worldwide

Today millions of people need to access the World Wide Web on a daily basis and the email and search related services are required by them every now and then. That explains why the breakdown of such services can put a stop to their workflow and activities. Yesterday, the wiki users got a taste of the service breakdown and the Wikipedia site problem took the users by surprise. The Wiki site is accessed by millions of users for various purposes and they saw red when the site could not be accessed. It took them a while to understand what was going on. Later, the confusion was clear and the users got to know that the breakdown was triggered by a server overheating problem.

The Wikipedia European Data center got overheated and a number of Wiki servers closed down the service to stop damage to the data bank. This problem resulted in a DNS resolution failure which thwarted the attempts of the Wiki team that was trying to divert the traffic to other running servers. The users who got a 'server not found' message posted in their social networking accounts and tried to sort out the reason. Some people feared that it could be a hacking attack.

Facebook Accused of Syphilis Rise in Britain

For those who feel social networking sites are safe heaven for hook ups, here's an eye-opener. According to Health experts at NHS Hartlepool in Britain, Facebook is partly responsible for the rise in cases of Syphilis in three areas Sunderland, Durham and Teesside, where the site is immensely popular. Syphilis is a sexually transmitted disease that is highly transmissible through sexual contact.

Sites like Facebook have made it easier for people to "meet up for casual sex", as told to Telegraph by the Peter Kelly, Director of Public Health in Teesside. According to Kelly, most of the syphilis cases he saw, came from the people who had met their sexual partners on these sites. The victims include a significant number of women.

The accusation on Facebook of aggravating STD and Facebook, has been supported by some stats that suggests, "young people in Sunderland, Durham and Teesside were 25 per cent more likely to log ontosocial networking sites than those in the rest of Britain."

Islamic Court in Nigeria Bans Twitter for Debating on Amputation

An Islamic court in Nigeria has banned the use of Twitter and Facebook websites for conducting debates on the use of amputations as a form of punishment.

The court, in the northern city of Kaduna, backed a case brought by a pro-Sharia group arguing that a rights group was hosting debates on social networking sites, which would mock the Sharia system.

The Civil Rights Congress of Nigeria has said that it would appeal against the ruling, BBC reports.

Sharia judges can order amputations of limbs for petty crimes in some states. The courts mostly deal with domestic issues such as marriage and divorce.

Bayi Terkecil di Dunia

Bertahan hidupnya bayi terkecil di dunia merupakan sebuah mukjizat di dunia kedoketeran. Bayi tersebut terlahir prematur pada minggu ke 25 dengan berat hanya 275 gram, lebih ringan daripada sebuah kaleng Coke. Bayi laki-laki tersebut terlahir di Rumah sakit Gottingen, Jerman. Terlahir pada saat kehamilan 25 mingu dan dirawat terlebih dahulu dalam inkubator selama seminggu sebelum diizinkan pulang ke rumahnya. Bayi dengan panjang 27 cm tersebut diizinkan pulang oleh dokter karena mereka meyakini bahwa bayi tersebut cukup kuat untuk dapat bertahan hidup. Juru bicara rumah sakit mengatakan bahwa dokter yakin bahwa bayi tersebut akan tumbuh secara normal, dan sehat.

Bayi tersebut lahir 15 minggu lebih awal melalui operasi caesar, setelah ibunya datang ke rumah sakit dan mengabarkan bahwa kandunganya dalam resiko.

MUI : Alat Bantu Seks Haram

Para penikmat barang "mainan dewasa" seks toys, harus pikir-pikir seribu kali untuk memuaskan hasrat biologisnya melalui cara yang tidak menggunakan saluran seksual yang sebenarnya. Pasalnya, Majelis Ulama Indonesia (MUI) mengategorikan kegiatan seks tidak pada "tempatnya" itu sebagai perbuatan yang haram.

Seperti diterangkan Sekretaris Komisi Fatwa MUI Aminudin Yakub, Senin siang (22/3/2010).

Dipaparkan Aminudin, dalam hukum Islam terdapat kaidah hukum asal yang berkaitan dengan persetubuhan. Persetubuhan antara laki-laki dan perempuan asal-muasalnya diharamkan, hingga kemudian dihalalkan setelah terjadinya akad nikah.

Sementara penggunaan sex toys itu berkaitan dengan hubungan seksual yang menggantikan peran manusia, yang sejatinya persetubuhan hanya dihalalkan bagi manusia dengan manusia. Sedangkan tidak ada pernikahan antara manusia dengan alat. Sehingga hukum persetubuhan kembali ke hukum asalnya, yakni haram.

Ahmad Dhani Kurang Setuju Gay Tapi Dukung Lesbi

Rencananya, kongres lesbi, gay dan biseks se-Asia akan digelar di Surabaya, Jawa Timur dalam waktu dekat ini. Sebagai arek Suroboyo, musisi Ahmad Dhani pun memberikan tanggapan soal kongres tersebut. Ini dia, tanggapan Bos Republik Cinta itu.

Kaum Gay dan Lesbian Se-Asia Adakan Kongres di Surabaya

Jika tak ada aral-melintang, organisasi gay dan lesbian se-Asia akan menggelar pertemuan akbar di Surabaya pada 26 hingga 28 Maret mendatang. Kegiatan yang baru pertama kali digelar di Indonesia ini bakal diikuti sedikitnya 200 peserta dari belasan negara di Asia dan didatangi peserta tamu dari benua lain.

Pertemuan yang berlabel The International Lesbian and Gay Association (ILGA) Asia Regional Conference ini merupakan kongres yang keempat kalinya. Tiga kali pertemuan sebelumnya digelar di Chiang Mai, Thailand (2008), Cebu, Filipina (2005), dan Mumbai, India (2002).

Ketua Panitia ILGA Asia Regional Conference, Poedjiati Tan mengakui, perhelatan ini akan berlangsung di Hotel Mirama Grand Marcure Surabaya. A Bad Week for Google?

By some accounts, this week hasn't been so great for Google.

The first bit of bad news concerns sales of Google's Nexus One phone.

On Tuesday, the market analytics firm Flurry released a report saying initial sales of Google's Nexus One phone have been slim compared to the Droid and the iPhone. The firm compared sales of those those phones over the first 74 days they were on the market. In a blog post, Flurry says it chose that time period because that's how long it took the original iPhone to sell 1 million handsets when it was released in 2007.

Facebook Responds to Massive Phishing Scheme

Facebook has responded to a an apparently massive attempt to steal passwords from its users.

"There's another spoofed email going around that claims to be from Facebook and asks you to open an attachment to receive a new password," read a post on the Facebook Security page. "This email is fake. Delete it from your inbox, and warn your friends."

Facebook will never send users a new password in an attachment, the post says.

Google TV Gandeng Intel, Sony, dan Logitech

Perusahaan internet raksasa dunia, Google Inc, tak henti-hentinya berinovasi. Setelah sukses mengembangkan sistem operasi Android, kali ini Google berancang-ancang meluncurkan web televisi atau web TV yang juga berbasis Android.

Tak tanggung-tanggung, untuk pengembangan web TV itu, Google bakal menggandeng Intel Corp, Sony Corp, dan Logitech International SA. "Proyek ini akan dinamai Google TV," ujar dua orang sumber yang ikut dalam pertemuan Google dengan perusahaan-perusahaan tersebut, kepada Bloomberg, Kamis (18/3/2010).

Pengguna Facebook Mobile Capai 25,1 Juta

Akses terhadap situs-situs jejaring sosial melalui browser mobile terus mencatat pertumbuhan signifikan. Lembaga riset ComScore melaporkan, pertumbuhan akses ke Facebook melalui perangkat bergerak sekitar 112 persen, sementara Twitter meroket hingga 347 persen.

FBI Using Phony Profiles on Social Networks to Track Criminals Online

The FBI and other federal agencies are going undercover on Facebook, LinkedIn, MySpace and other social networks with phony profiles to gather information and communicate with suspects, according to an internal Justice Department document.

FBI agents, for example, have used Facebook to determine the whereabouts of a fugitive. Other investigators can check alibis by comparing stories a suspect tells police with their tweets sent at the same time .

A civil liberties group, The Electronic Frontier Foundation, obtained the 33-page document after suing the Justice Department. It makes the document public today on its website.

Specifically, the 33-page confidential document says undercover operations are helpful for communicating with suspects and targets of crime, gaining access to private information, and mapping social networks. However, the presentation expresses concern that undercover use may be complicated by the court’s decision in the trial of Lori Drew, who was acquitted of cyber-bullying a girl who later committed suicide, and that violations of terms of service by not using their own name can render access unauthorized.

Militants in Aceh Are Jemaah Islamiyah, Say Indonesian Police

Anti terror police searching for Islamic militants in Aceh Besar

National Police Chief Gen. Bambang Hendarso Danuri said on Tuesday that armed militants on the run in the remote mountains of Aceh are part of the Jemaah Islamiyah regional terrorist network.

Bambang said the militants, who have been the target of a bloody three-week police manhunt across the province, had been undergoing terrorist training in Jalin Jantho, Aceh Besar district, before their camp was raided on Feb. 22.

“They are all members of the regional Jemaah Islamiyah network, who are most wanted for their role in a string of bombings,” he said.

JI is a Southeast Asian network affiliated with Al Qaeda. The group is blamed for killing 202 people in Bali in 2002 and 12 others at the JW Marriott Hotel in Jakarta in 2003.

Google vs Facebook 'Oh Hell'

Social-networking star Facebook surpassed Google to become the most visited website in the United States for the first time last week, industry analysts showed.

Facebook’s homepage finished the week ending March 13 as the most visited site in the country, according to industry tracker Hitwise.

The “important milestone,” as described by Hitwise director of research Heather Dougherty, came as Facebook enjoyed a massive 185 percent increase in visits in the same period, compared to the same week in 2009.

By comparison, visits to search engine home Google.com increased only nine percent in the same time — although the tracker does not include Google property sites such as the popular Gmail email service, YouTube and Google Maps.

Facebook CommentsTNG is a plugin for your Wordpress blog that will spider your notes page and find imported Wordpress blogs and bring the comments back into Wordpress. This is a complete rewrite from the original but I did borrow some ideas from it. Kudos to the original authors for their initial effort and for their plugin giving me the motivation to write this one!

Needle in a Haystack: Efficient Storage of Billions of Photos

The Photos application is one of Facebook’s most popular features. Up to date, users have uploaded over 15 billion photos which makes Facebook the biggest photo sharing website. For each uploaded photo, Facebook generates and stores four images of different sizes, which translates to a total of 60 billion images and 1.5PB of storage. The current growth rate is 220 million new photos per week, which translates to 25TB of additional storage consumed weekly. At the peak there are 550,000 images served per second. These numbers pose a significant challenge for the Facebook photo storage infrastructure.

NFS photo infrastructure

The old photo infrastructure consisted of several tiers:

• Upload tier receives users’ photo uploads, scales the original images and saves them on the NFS storage tier.
• Photo serving tier receives HTTP requests for photo images and serves them from the NFS storage tier.
• NFS storage tier built on top of commercial storage appliances.

Since each image is stored in its own file, there is an enormous amount of metadata generated on the storage tier due to the namespace directories and file inodes. The amount of metadata far exceeds the caching abilities of the NFS storage tier, resulting in multiple I/O operations per photo upload or read request. The whole photo serving infrastructure is bottlenecked on the high metadata overhead of the NFS storage tier, which is one of the reasons why Facebook relies heavily on CDNs to serve photos. Two additional optimizations were deployed in order to mitigate this problem to some degree:

• Cachr: a caching server tier caching smaller Facebook "profile" images.
• NFS file handle cache - deployed on the photo serving tier eliminates some of the NFS storage tier metadata overhead

Securing Your Social Networking Brand

Social networking sites as innocent as LinkedIn and as provocative as Twitter (have you seen my stream?) have now become a personal branding vehicle many professionals. Some of us have had the unfortunate experience of losing a job we barely had thanks to social networking. Others have seen it as the boost to their career they have been wanting for years. Let’s talk about security in the context of the latter.

When I moved my blog to a setup I administered, I made two commitments to myself. The first is that I would make frequent backups because there has yet to be a flawless content management system introduced to the market and I could only assume I would have some kind of security problem along the way. The second was that I would pay money to wrap my entire blog inside an SSL stream.

My primary goal with forcing all of the traffic through and SSL tunnel was to seamlessly provide a way for me to connect and administer the content from anywhere (like a coffee shop I frequent) without fear of my credentials being snooped. Like most of us out there, I’ve hacked together some security tricks that work 95% of the time, but require some attention when they break. I didn’t want to be fiddling with a broken SSL stream when I had an inspiration for the next pile of brain vomit for my blog.

Windows Phone 7 Takes Its Cue From the iPhone

If I were to describe the attributes of a smartphone platform to you, could you guess which platform it is? Let’s try it and see. Here’s your first clue: Applications for it can only be installed through one specific app store. Since everyone has an app store these days, I’ll give you another hint. This phone family doesn’t support storage expansion through small memory cards. That should rule out a few contenders, but let’s take it one step further. The operating system doesn’t allow third-party applications to run in the background, but does allow notifications for these apps to make up for it. Think you know now? If you answered Apple’s iPhone, then you’re technically correct, but there’s a surprising answer that’s equally correct.


The phone I am talking about is not an iPhone, but the new Microsoft Windows Phone.

The very same Apple attributes are causing some iPhone critics to say “I hate it” are, as Sacha Segan of PC Magazine notes, the same attributes that Microsoft is embracing. On the one hand, it’s difficult to argue with Apple’s success. The total control of hardware and software allows the Cupertino company to offer a consistent end-user experience — something that can’t be said of Microsoft’s current Windows Mobile handsets. With Windows Phone 7 however, Microsoft is taking over the overall experience in a very Apple-like way. In order to illustrate the similarities between Apple’s iPhone and Microsoft’s Windows Phone 7 approaches let’s look a look at some key attributes among the current and planned smartphone platforms:

Pertumbuhan tersebut terutama ditopang pesatnya pengguna dari luar Amerika Serikat. Di Chili dan Turki, facebook bahkan sangat digdaya. Sebanyak 76 persen dan 66 persen pengguna internet di kedua negara adalah warga “republik” facebook. Bagaimana di negara kita? Sebanyak 17,78 persen (2,3 juta) dari total pengguna internet juga tergila-gila dengan situs ciptaan Mark Zuckerberg itu.

Jumlah pengguna yang besar tentu saja menjadi berkah buat facebook. Sejumlah analis menghitung, di atas kertas nilai facebook adalah 6-15 miliar dollar AS. Pada 2007 facebook berutang 30 juta dollar AS untuk urusan server. Angka itu melonjak menjadi 60 juta dollar AS pada 2008. BusinessWeek melaporkan, utang facebook melesat menjadi 100 juta dollar AS untuk ekspansi servernya. Dengan dana sebesar itu, awalnya facebook menyewa ruang 10.000 kaki persegi di Santa Clara. Saat ini facebook mengoperasikan empat pusat data di AS (3 di West Coast dan 1 di East Coast) dengan lahan yang digunakan mencapai 45.000 kaki persegi.

Facebook these days is doing everything in its power to imitate Google, recruiting the search giant’s sales people, poaching its senior executives and — most importantly — using infrastructure as a competitive advantage. Like Google, Facebook has figured out that the right web infrastructure is the difference between user delight and dismay. And like Google, Facebook is finding out that it isn’t cheap.


I’ve been trying to get a handle on Facebook’s infrastructure for some time, but so far have been unable to get the company to open up. The last time I reached out to them, back in January, I was hearing that they had between 1,200 and 1,500 servers, along with storage and switches from EMC Corp. and Force 10 Networks respectively. As it turns out, those server numbers weren’t even close to the total servers used by them.

The company is running around 10,000 servers, according to Data Center Knowledge, citing comments made by Facebook VP of technology, Jeff Rothschild, at a recent MySQL user conference. (See video of the panel.) Of the 10,000 servers, 1,800 are from MySQL and around 805 of them are memcached servers. How much is Facebook spending on its infrastructure? The company isn’t going to tell us, but there are clues. Server and storage company Rackable today reported first-quarter 2008 sales of around $69 million. Facebook is one of its largest customers, accounting for around 10 percent of Rackable’s sales (that number could be higher, but we’ll have to wait for Rackable’s 10-Q to get a clearer picture), so some quick, back-of-the-envelope math reveals $7 million in spending by the social networking company. A well placed source of mine just let me know that Facebook is going to spend over $9 million more on servers this year. That should be good news for Rackable. Next on my list is an estimate of Facebook’s bandwidth and data center costs.

Waspadalah Pengguna Facebook, Server Koobface Melonjak

Bila anda aktif mengakses situs-situs jejaring sosial seperti Facebook dan Twitter waspadalah terhadap worm bernama Koobface. Perusahaan antivirus Kaspersky memperingatkan kebangkitan Koobface dalam dua pekan terakhir.

Dalam dua pekan terakhir tim peneliti dari Kaspersky Lab terus memantau Koobface. Mereka menemukan angka penurunan jumlah server Koobface dari 107 pada 25 Februari ke 71 pada 8 Maret. Tapi dalam 48 jam kemudian, angkanya malah melonjak menjadi 142.

Menurut analis dari Kaspersky, hasil pengamatan tersebut membuktikan bahwa pemilik Koobface terus menangani infrastrukturnya. "Mereka tak ingin jumlah server turun terlalu banyak karena itu berarti kehilangan kendali atas botnet," ujar Stefan Tanase, Senior Regional Researcher Kaspersky Lab EEMEA.

Jumlah Server Facebook Menembus Angka 30.000 Server

Rothschild mengatakan akan tetap terus menambah server facebook bilamana pengguna Facebook terus bertambah setiap harinya, ia juga mengatakan jumlah server Facebook masih jauh dibandingkan dengan Rackspace, 1&1 Internet dan OVH yang jumlah servernya mencapai 50.000 server.
